Regulations for Importing Pets to Costa Rica

Attention: This information will be used as general guidelines and may not be updated to meet the current requirements. Before you travel, contact the appropriate authorities for your destination country.

  • Microchip: While not required for pets traveling to Costa Rica, we highly recommend microchips for all pets traveling internationally for identification and safety purposes.

  • Rabies Vaccination and Certificate: All pets must have an original Rabies Certificate signed by the vet. This should be a one-year rabies vaccine administered at least 30 days before the day of departure.

  • Additional Vaccines:

    • For Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (DHLPP), as well as Bordetella.
    • For Cats: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP).
    • Note: These vaccines should be valid at the time of import and administered no less than two weeks before the export date for maximum effectiveness. Consult with your PetRelocation Specialist to confirm any additional vaccines.
  • Vet Health Certificate (Form 7001): A USDA-accredited veterinarian must fill out this standard Health Certificate and be issued within 10 days of the flight.

  • Copy of Pet Owner's Passport: To successfully clear customs, provide a copy of the pet owner's passport before the pet's arrival.

Crate Training and Comfort: Preparing Your Pet for Travel

  • To ensure your pet's comfort and reduce stress during the journey, we recommend crate training in the weeks leading up to the move. A crate-trained pet will feel much more relaxed in a familiar and safe space.
