How to Help Central Texas Pets Displaced by the Wildfires

APA logoSeptember 7, 2011

As the wildfires in Central Texas continue to rage, communities in this area have been working hard to aid the people and pets who have been affected. Whether you're a resident of Texas or not, you may be wondering how you can make a difference during this devastating disaster.

Here are a few ways to help:

-If you live in Austin, you can donate supplies to Austin Pets Alive or drop them off at one of the Dirty Dog Self-Serve Grooming and Dog Wash locations around town. Rescue workers are specifically requesting water, burn cream, bowls, cat carriers and canned food.

-People who live near Bastrop, Smithville, Spicewood, Steiner Ranch, Leander and all the other affected Central Texas areas can also adopt or foster pets from local shelters so as to make more room for the dogs and cats that will inevitably need to be taken in over the next several days.

-Donate to the Humane Society.

-Donate to the American Red Cross of Texas.

It will take months to recover from these fires, so it's important to sustain our efforts for more than just the present news cycle. Let's take good care of each other and our pets!
