Double Check EU Pet Travel Rules for the UK and Ireland

International pet travel is all about the details, and we just learned of a new one that may affect pet travelers going to the UK or Ireland.

If you have an EU pet passport and are traveling into the UK or Ireland, the rabies vaccination must have been done by a veterinarian inside the EU for it to be accepted. In the past some EU passport holders have been allowed entry from the United States, Canada, and other third countries, but now those travelers will need to have (in addition to the pet passport) the EU Journal Annex II certificate issued and endorsed no more than 10 days before arrival.

Further, remember that any new vaccinations obtained outside the EU should not be noted on the passport, but rather on a separate certificate.

Essentially the EU has begun to enforce EU regulations more strictly, and having the EU passport alone only permits travel between EU countries (no more bending the rules).

If you have questions about this requirement or pet travel in general, please contact us and one of our Specialists will clarify things and/or talk about how we may be able to help with a solution for your upcoming move.
