Pet Friendly Destinations: Scotland’s Code of Etiquette

One of our Pet Relocation Specialists recently took a vacation to Scotland, and she returned with some great stories about how pet friendly a place it is (more on her experiences later).

Before we go into detail, we thought we'd offer a quick overview of how they welcome pups on the other side of the Atlantic -- and welcome pet owners to exercise good judgment for the sake of everyone.

Scotland is known for its incredible scenery, and it sounds like the various nature and canine councils realize that many people love including their dogs in their countryside wanderings. That's why a dog owner's guide has been outlined for citizens and visitors that advises people about their privileges and suggested etiquette in a way that celebrates pet-friendliness while promoting respect of the landscape, as well.

Here are a few selections from the Scottish Outdoor Access Code:

• Don't take your dogs into fields where there are lambs, calves or other young animals.

• Don't take your dog into fields of vegetables or fruit unless you are on a clear path and keep your dog on the path.

• If you go into a field of farm animals, keep as far as possible from the the animals and keep your dog on a short lead or under close control.

• If cattle react aggressively and move towards you, keep calm, let the dog go and take the shortest, safest route out of the field.

• During the bird breeding season (usually April to July), keep your dog under close control or on a short lead in areas such as moorland, forests, grassland, loch shores and the seashore.

• Some reservoirs and streams are used for public water supply. If there are intakes nearby, keep your dog out of the water.

Sounds like Scotland is working to provide a good balance between inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence as far as dogs go. Not every area of the world has to worry about fields of vegetables and bird-populated lochs, so it's smart of them to take the lead and attempt to educate visitors.
