Pet Travel Question: Snub-Nosed Dog Air Travel

Hi PetRelocation,

It seems that many airlines do not allow pug nosed breeds to fly in the cargo holds. Which airlines do/would you use? It is possible to get a direct flight?

Sophie will panic if I am not there and she's also prone to asthma attacks (like many pug-nosed breeds) if she's nervous.

Thanks,

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your question, we completely understand your concerns and flying with snub-nosed pets certainly requires extra thought and planning.

Different airlines operate with different policies when it comes to Pugs, Bull dogs and other brachycephalic breeds, so it's best to go straight to the airline(s) you're considering to find out what they allow and require. Generally speaking, we use pet friendly airlines like United, KLM, Lufthansa and British Airways whenever possible.

Here is more information about flying with snub-nosed breeds, and here are a few frequently asked pet travel questions, including a discussion about whether or not your pet should actually fly. It can be tough, but some pet owners end up deciding that air travel is simply not worth the risk for dogs prone to breathing problems and nervousness.

On the other hand, with their vet's approval and when using a larger travel crate, many snub-nosed pet owners manage completely safe relocations. Note that crate acclimation is especially important for nervous and snub-nosed pets.

Thanks for your question, and please don't hesitate to give us a call if you'd like to discuss this issue further with an experienced Pet Relocation Consultant.

Hope this helps, Ashley. Good luck with everything!
