Can I bring a bird from the US to Ecuador? Are the rules the same as for dogs and cats? Is there a quarantine and if so can it be done at home? If we decide to leave Ecuador, can we bring our bird?
Thank you,
Marta
Hi Marta,
Because birds are considered exotic pets, there are stricter rules in place than there would be to ship a dog or cat. Shipping a bird requires a lot of careful planning, paperwork, and special equipment (you will need an airline-approved crate for your parrot). Check out these tips for relocating birds to get an idea of what will be involved.
Ecuadorian pet import requirements normally do not require a quarantine, though you may find that the case is different for your parrot. Check out our page of resources for shipping exotic pets. African Grey Parrots are considered a CITES protected species, so shipping them requires both export and import permits. You should get in contact with government agencies of both Ecuador and the United States as soon as possible, as the process of securing permits for your bird will take several months. If you decide to leave Ecuador, you will have to go through the same process of acquiring documents for both Ecuador and your destination country.
