Hi,
I'm planning on moving to the United States and I'm concerned about the Breed Specific Legislation, more specifically the banned breeds. I have a 2-year-old German Shepherd, which is on a number of the banned/dangerous breed lists. Will I be able to take her with me?
Thanks in advance,
Jenny
Hi Jenny,
Thank you for your question! We have good news for you -- the United States does not have any restrictions in place regarding importing dog breeds, and overall German Shepherds do not typically encounter many problems in the country.
The only issue you may run into involves renting a pet friendly house or apartment. Some rental properties may have breed restrictions (mostly aimed towards Pit Bulls but sometimes other breeds, as well) so you'll probably want to do some advance research if you plan to rent an apartment or house.
As for navigating the travel process, please take a look at the pet import requirements for the United States along with these frequently asked pet travel questions. We advise choosing a pet safe airline for your dog (typically we use KLM, Lufthansa and United for our pet clients' flights) and making sure your dog's pet travel kennel is approved by the airline and is also the right size.
If you're interested in hiring assistance with planning this pet relocation, contact us to discuss your options with a pet travel consultant. We would be happy to help you carry out your German Shepherd's move!
Thanks again for reaching out and happy traveling!
