Four Ways to Have a Pet Friendly Holiday Season

How to Keep Pets Safe and Happy During the Holidays

Thanksgiving has almost arrived and other end-of-the-year festivities are fast approaching -- sounds like the perfect time to revisit a few pet safety tips.

It's easy for our four-legged friends to get lost in the shuffle during this busy time of year, but we owe it to them to keep them healthy, happy and safe.

Here are a few things to remember as the holidays get going:

Think Ahead

If you're traveling, call your hosts ahead of time to discuss whether or not your canine companion will be welcome. If you're choosing to keep pets at home while you travel, arrange pet sitting or boarding well in advance of the holiday.

Stay Active

Stress and fatigue tend to push their way into your life around the holidays, so that's all the more reason to keep up a good walking schedule with your dogs and allow for plenty of playtime with all pets. Moving around will be an anxiety-buster for everyone, as exercise is good for mental and physical health.

Be Food-Savvy

A little overindulgence is to be expected during this time of year, but certain foods can be extremely harmful for pets. Turkey skin, cooked bones, onion, garlic, alcohol, nuts, chocolate and even spices like sage and nutmeg can cause upset stomachs, so keep these holiday favorites out of your pets' reach.

Have a 'What-If' Plan

Just in case of a separation or emergency, make sure your pet's ID tags are attached and current, keep vet information handy, and if you're traveling, have a back-up plan in case your sitter or housing situation falls through.

Here are a few more holiday pet travel preparation tips for those of you hitting during the next few weeks. Enjoy your festivities and stay safe, everyone!
